Psoriasis can be uncomfortable, embarrassing and very irritating. A reoccurring autoimmune disorder identifies by red, flaky patches on the skin, psoriasis affects people the world over. Often regarded as a condition with no remedy, there are several ways to alleviate the severity of psoriasis, and some literature suggests an overall reversal, if specific dietary, lifestyle and supplementary factors are addressed.

Diet
Everything starts with what we put into our bodies, and as an autoimmune illness protection against psoriasis starts within. Sufferers are advised to follow specific guidelines regarding what foods to eat. Eliminating or reducing intake of red meats and excessively fatty foods have been effective in reducing the symptoms. The National Psoriasis Foundation list soy, nuts, chocolate, and cranberries as functional foods.
In addition, research is being carried out into the effectiveness of Omega-3s in combating psoriasis. To include these into your diet, be sure to add more oily fish and cold pressed oils such as flaxseed, hemp seed, walnut and other nut oils.
Weight control is a key element of helping soothe psoriasis issues, and incorporating lower GI colourful fruits and vegetables, reducing sugar and simple carb intake will help achieve this, so the diet is a crucial role in maintaining a psoriasis free life. Ultimately being overweight makes symptoms harder to manage, and reducing weight can help replenish energy supplies; giving more energy to the immune system to help keep health in prime condition.
Interestingly, both fish and olive oils have been applied topically to hydrate psoriasis; with some positive effects.
Supplements
A range of supplements have been popularized in their ability to ease psoriasis symptoms from the inside. In at one is fish oil, but also a vitamin D supplement, milk thistle, and evening primrose oil have helped sufferers in the past. It’s worth investigating and also keeping a diary to test whether supplements may interfere with other pre-existing conditions, or have harmful side effects. Research and make note if anything unusual occurs.
Lifestyle cautions
Stay hydrated
As well as ensuring a healthier body and lymph system, making sure you are hydrated helps you feel less effect from any illnesses.
Use a humidifier
It will ensure the air around you is kept moist. This can be used as a year-round preventative measure, rather than only whipped out when suffering a bad bout!
Choose products carefully
Most soaps, shampoos and shower gels contain dyes and fragrances which have a tendency to inflame psoriasis. Sensitive-skin moisturizers help to lock moisture in; keeping skin supple and free from forming plaque or psoriasis.
Use oil
Usually we associate olive oil with internal health, but applying olive or vegetable oils like coconut to scales and patches of psoriasis can lock moisture and nutrients in, whilst keeping skin supple. Attempt massaging your scalp with a few tablespoons in your shower and see what the effect is on your plaques.
Watch out for temperature!
Too hot water will exacerbate problems and can cause flare ups, so it’s definite no-no. However, a lukewarm bath with added Epsom salts, or carrier oils like almond or olive can really help to soothe itching and reverse scales and plaques brought on by psoriasis. Moisturize with a sensitive skin product immediately after your bath to keep moisture in.
Treat infections immediately
Systemic infections such as influenza, streptococcal infections or gastroenteritis can bring on a flare up of psoriasis for some people. Everything should be done to eradicate infections ASAP, by contacting your doctor at the first sign of worry. (E.g. when you have a sore throat, etc.)
Apply skin products carefully
As well as being sensitive to the products used, psoriasis causes the skin to be scaly and sometimes this leads to open sores. Exercise care with irritants; attempting to apply only when your skin is relatively free of lesions, and apply around any affected area.
Avoid injury to skin
Protect yourself against sunburn, minor scratches, and even irritation from tight clothing – all of which can cause or aggravate psoriasis.
